The United States Navy Birthday Ball is an annual celebration of the U.S. Navy’s founding in 1775. The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on October 13, 1775 by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. In 1972 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized recognition of October 13th as the Navy’s official birthday. Since that time, each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion "to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service." Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Spokane has annually celebrated the Navy’s birthday in October since 1999 by holding the Spokane Navy Ball. This year’s Spokane Navy Ball will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Northern Quest Resort & Casino’s Pend Oreille Pavilion. The no host social hour begins at 5:30pm, followed at 6:45pm with a traditional ceremony, dinner and dancing.
